Alcina for a tribute to Händel in the one hundred and sixty years since his death.
Alcina was the last great opera by Händel, as well as the last work of the ‘Ariosto trilogy’ after Orlando and Ariodante, presented in April 1735 at Covent Garden. In Alcina Händel is inspired by one of the most fantastic episodes of the poem, that of the sorceress Alcina, who seduces the knights arrived on his enchanted island and then turn them into animals, plants or rocks.
Thanks to the musical characterization of the characters, caught in the variety of emotions that develop during the action, Alcina is one of Händel’s most famous works.
