A touching and sweet story, Enoch Arden tells the story of three children, Enoch, Philipp and Annie who often play together on the beach among the wrecks brought from the sea. When they became teenagers, Enoch and Philipp fell in love with Annie. She prefers Enoch to Philipp – who has also become a sailor – and marries him. One day, however, Enoch embarks on a long journey … From here comes a beautiful story, inwardly troubled, with a frank taste of legend. In the background the sea, with its disturbing and obsessive bellow, frames the events of the protagonists and embodies the profound, ineluctable nature of feelings and destiny. Lord Alfred Tennyson’s poem is taken by Richard Strauss who makes it a melologue where music accompanies and masterfully emphasizes the whole story.
