That night in Leipzig, when the Russian ambassador, suffering from insomnia, asked Bach to succeed where the doctors failed, Make him finally sleep, give him the balm of rest again.
Bach accepted the challenge, as Carlo Broschi Farinelli had done five years before, in Madrid, with Filippo IV di Borbone: there the voice, here the sound of a harpsichord. From variation to variation, the lullaby becomes a masterpiece. And he knows how to pull you in, how you can not go out, how to charm yourself.
The Goldberg Variations are a breathtaking score, structured in a succession of thirty variations over an air of superb beauty that opens and closes the work in a circular unicum. There are numerous recordings, also very used by soundtracks from The Silence of the Innocents, to Shame and Hannibal, to name just a few of the films that used these notes as a commentary on the images. This has contributed to making them one of the most appreciated and known pieces by many classical music lovers but also by the general public.
A great performer as Ramin Bahrami, who has a very special bond with Bach and with the Goldberg Variations. To enter that court, in those sleepless nights, and especially in the mind of Bach, which turns a commission even insulting – “Let me sleep!” – in a prodigy, which today causes us to lose rather than find sleep.
