The sparkling “Opéra-bouffe” La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Offenbach’s birth.
The Grande Duchess of Gérolstein, opéra bouffe in three acts and four tableaux by Jacques Offenbach on an original libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy; the history is a satirical critique of militarism.
The work conceals a thin veil of melancholy, tied to unrealizable loves, death sentences, wars and deceptions made by very serious ties. All inserted in a frame that does not show the dynamics of relationships between human beings. It is the antithesis of Wagnerian taste; many of the protagonists are stereotypes of realistic characters.
